Co-washing (washing with conditioner) is a method of cleaning the hair without the use of shampoos. Many commercial shampoos contain ingredients called sulfates which is a chemical compound used in the cosmetic industry to remove oil and greases. The problem that can arise with the use of sulfates is stripped and dried hair. Co-washing eliminates the stripping of oils from the hair while still effectively cleansing the strands. Co-washing is especially good for someone who doesn’t use a lot of products in their hair, where a clarifying shampoo would be more appropriate for cleansing.
Most curlies use a cheap conditioner for this process. I like to either use Suave Naturals or Herbal Essence Hello Hydration depending on my hair’s current needs. The conditioner is applied to the hair in the same manner as shampoo cleaning the scalp and the hair. Some like to add essential oil to their conditioner for added oomph.
Co-washing is the predominate way that I clean my hair. Once every six weeks I use a clarifying shampoo right before my protein treatment to ensure the protein has a clean surface to bind to, and get the maximum benefits. As always…
