One thing that I have never done was dye my hair. Even before my natural days I was just terrified of the brittle and breakage that occurs with some hair dyes. I’d flashback to my high school days where girls strolled the hallways with severely broken off amber colored ponytails that were barely long enough for a hair tie. Or hair worn down but so thin and broken it was see-through. This is what prompted me to stay far and clear from hair dye.
The closest I’ve gotten to dye was the rinse. For a few years in my early 20s I used a black rinse on my hair religiously. I did at that time love the dark hair but as the rinse began to wear off my hair took on a green tinged color in the sun. *not a good look* In order to get back to my pretty brown hue I had to wait the green out for several months without applying another rinse.
All of this brings me to today. Over the weekend I was at a BBQ for the holiday and sitting at a table beside me was a chick with the baddest hair color and I wanted it! I was a golden brown with slight red undertones and would look shit hot with my skin. However, the images of hot mess of broken off dyed hair still haunt me. But my plan is to do some research, find a true colorist, not a stylist and sit down for a consultation. I truly want to lighten my hair a few levels but it needs to be done right. I know I’ll probably have to change my regimen to ensure the appropriate hot mess preventive measure are taken, but this is something that I’ve been wanting to do for years, and at this point I know a ton more about my hair needs then I did then. So, I’m going to stop being a punk about color and woman-up.
