This past Saturday I was out and about in the Rittenhouse section of the city (my favorite stomping ground) and carried on like I normally do. But, what I’ve noticed that was a bit different this time is some of the interactions that I had with other naturals. Now, I don’t know if this happens to any of you, but occurs quite often for me. When walking and happen to run into other naturals an unspoken “hey girl, I’m diggin’ the hair” is usually exchanged between myself and the other ladies. But this past weekend when I stepped out with my straightened tresses the friendly unspoken exchanges were replaced with a glance at me, a glance up at my hair, and another cold stare down back at me like I took her man. The only thing going through my mind was WTF! All the warm sisterlove was replaced by ‘I know you’re sleeping with my man’ vibes. One thing that I know is that I didn’t lose my damn mind and I didn’t imagine just one single event. It continued to happen about four times that day.
This got me wondering are women really this hostile to other women who they “think” relaxes their hair? I’ve seen heated exchanges online and in forums but I never gave a second thought to this type of separatism transcending beyond the virtual world. Throwing daggers at unsuspecting women who cross their paths solely based on something they “think they know”. Well anyway I just thought that it was interesting how my experience changed with the changing of my hair.
